To improve your room's energy efficiency, you can lay heat cables over underfloor heating insulation boards (6mm or 10mm thick), which will result in less time it takes to heat up and a reduction in the amount of heat loss through uninsulated floors.

How do I calculate the correct size of BodenWärme heating kit?

To calculate which kit size is right for your project, you need to first work out the area of the whole floor space by multiplying the length of the floor by the width. Once this is done, you should then subtract any fixed furniture from the area with a clearance of less than 50mm above the floor. This will eliminate the risk of causing hot spots in your room. Once you have a total area minus the subtractions, you should deduct a further 10% from your total as this will allow for the spacing between cables and around the perimeter of the room.

Please note:

• Cables cannot be shortened or have excess cut off at the end. Unfortunately, once the cables have been trimmed/cut, you cannot return them.
• The maximum total size of 150w/m² BodenWärme underfloor heating cables that a single thermostat can control is 20m². Should you require to cover an area greater than 20m², the area should be divided into separate zones and controlled via multiple thermostats.
• As with all electrical projects governed by Part P regulations, a certified electrician must undertake all mains electrical connections.
• The heating must be protected by a 30 Amp Residual Current Device (30mA RCD), protecting against electric shock. This can be positioned within the consumer unit or via a dedicated fused spur.
• You should also ensure that the total current of your heating system does not exceed the current capacity of the circuit it is connected to. Standard domestic ring circuits are rated at 13 Amp, and you can take an electrical feed via a single 13 Amp fused spur.
